fades.net at the 12PQ011

Live exhibition at 12th Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space. Monday june 20th 2011, from 11am and for about 20 minutes every connection to this site (or any refresh of this page) added a new sinusoid to the main audio system of the foyer of New Stage of The National Theatre. We got 840 connections in 20 minutes which made it a success. Here you can listen to an excerpt of the performance, the first 400 connections building the drone.

fades.net is a piece about additive synthesis. Every connection to fades.net website (via any internet device such as laptop, iphone, iPad, blueberry, from all around the world) adds a new voice to the main audio system in the exhibition room. Day by day the space is saturate with a sonorous, ever changing drone. The more people connect to fades.net, the bigger the number of partials/sinusoids is utilized to build the standing wave. There is no interaction but a progressive addition of sinusoids. There can be up to hundreds and hundreds voices, every voice is different and continuously changing in amplitude. At the same time, fades.net is also a piece about collective participation applied to new communication technologies.
The subtitle - infinite tendencies of democracy - is referred to the question arising from contemporary influence of internet and worldwide realtime networking onto political and social domain. A wider political and social participation is nowadays reached through medias, internet is told responsible for all recent revolutions happened in north Africa and in this sense it is likely to happen that it will bring to wider consequences in the next future. Democracy is to give everyone the opportunity to express and exchange ideas and opinions and internet seems to be the perfect tool for such a great goal. Chaos theory says the universe tends to balance and balance equals to chaos. A chaos wave in sound is known as noise. Might the chance of giving everyone the right to participate, bring to social and political chaos/noise?
